Here are a selection of short breaks, day trips and excursions from our base in Entebbe. The short breaks are excellent for pre safari relaxation while the day trips are excellent for adding interesting cultural and nature experiences. As they are lower priced days to add to the more expensive safari days, these can help bring the per day cost of your tours down.

Pre-Safari/Nature And Birding Excursions – Botanical Gardens Entebbe

A Must Place to visit – Entebbe Botanical Gardens Peaceful – Beautiful – Exotic – Tropical Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Entebbe Botanical Gardens provides a perfect introduction to the Pearl of Africa with all of its beauty and magical splendor.  The Botanical Gardens is beautiful pearl within the Pearl of Africa – Uganda – that most visitors do not get to see since it is not on the normal itinerary unless you are birder.

Birds – Monkeys – Flowers – Plants -Trees beyond the Imagination at Entebbe Botanical Gardens, one of the top things to do and see in Entebbe.  The Botanical Garden is over 100 years old, but has become more beautiful with age.  Tropical trees, plants, flowers, birds, monkeys, butterflies n abundance along Lake Victoria. Take a picnic lunch and spend a most wonderful day in Entebbe.  The Botanical Gardens is a great place to visit on the first or last day in Entebbe.  On the weekends it gets a bit crowded but during the week, most likely you will find few others that come here to visit.

Right at the entrance in the tall trees you usually find a pair of Verreaux’s eagle owls. Birds of the gardens include the orange tufted and red chested Sunbirds and Orange Weaver. The latter breed in the bushes on the shores of Lake Victoria along with slender-billed Northern Brown –throated, yellow backed, Jackson’s Golden –backed , Black-headed and Vieillot’s black weavers . The rocky headland along the Lake making an ideal observation point . On the lake and around the shore look for long-tailed Cormorant , Common Squacco and black-headed herons, hamerkop ,African Open-billed Stork , yellow billed duck , Grey headed gull , various terns ,giant and pied Kingfishers and swamp Flycatcher . Scan the boats at the large jetty where you often find Pratincoles (2-3 pairs are usually present). Black headed Gonolek and Red- chested Sunbird occur in the dense scrub covering the headland .

As you stroll along the paths, you will find a medicinal garden, stands of Bamboo, thick underbrush, towering trees, simply a lovely morning, afternoon or full day in the quiet of the Botanical Gardens along Lake Victoria that seems to appear over and over as you walk along.

Though morning is the best time of the day to spot the shoebill stork, anytime of the day is a good time, rarely does one leave Mabambwa Swamp without spotting the Shoebill Stork as well as many oher waterbirds that make Mabambwa Swamp their home and makes Mabamba Swamp the Best Place for seeing Shoebill Storks.

Mabamba Swamp is a large tract of marshlands with various channels through it and it provides the perfect habitat for countless of water-birds besides the Shoebill Stork such as Swamp Flycatcher, Winding Cisticola, Malachite Kingfisher, Black-headed Weavers, Yellow-billed Duck, Long-toed Lapwing, African Jacana and Blue-headed Coucal, Banded Martin, Grey-rumped and Angola Swallows, Intermediate Egret, Swamp Flycatcher, African Purple Swamp-hen, African Water Rail, Common Moorhen, Lesser Jacana, African Jacana, African Pygmy Goose, White-faced Whistling-duck, Squacco, Rufous-bellied and Purple Heron, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Winding Cisticola, Goliath Heron, Black Crake, African Marsh Harrier, Hamerkop, Malachite and Pied Kingfishers, Common Waxbill, Yellow-billed Duck, Blue-headed Cuckoo, Fan-tailed Widowbird, Intermediate Egret, Osprey, Long-toed Lapwing, African Pied Wagtail, and Red-billed Fire-finch.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Ngamba Island is a project of the Chimpanzees Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT), established in 1997 and it provides a home for over 40 orphaned chimpanzees to live out their lives, since a return to their natural habitat is not possible, while educating visitors and local communities about their remarkable species and the importance of conserving their fragile forest habitat.

Ngamba Island consists of approximately 100 acres, 98 of which are forested and separated from the visitors area by an electric fence where the chimpanzees roam through the day.

Clients can enjoy Chimpanzee encounters as a half or full-day excursion

You will view either a morning or afternoon feeding, of the chimpanzees from the visitors platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence, hear an informative talk by sanctuary staff, enjoy lunch ,swimming on the equator, viewing a neighbouring fishing village, bird watching, other wildlife encounters, or just sunbathe and relax.

Meeting point: In Entebbe, Lugard Avenue outside UWEC (Zoo) where safe parking is available and departure from the pier a short walk away. Journey times approximately 50 minutes by speedboat or 90 minutes each way by traditional motorised boat.

Uwec – Entebbe Zoo

The botanical gardens were laid out on the northern shores of the lake in 1898, they cover an area of 35 hectares and are perfect for a leisurely stroll and for some excellent birdwatching (115 species registered) – watch out for black and white colobus monkeys and for tree squirrels too! At one time there was a collection of 2,500 species of plants of tropical, sub-tropical and warm temperate zones.

The Chimpanzee Close Up Experience: Have you ever imagined meeting your closest cousin without a barrier in between? Subject to provision of valid health proof, participate in the chimpanzee integration experience. In company of a keeper, you will take the individuals on a walk at island moat.

Observe them enjoy life on trees, learn, adapt living with other chimps in a forest-like environment. The purpose is to help new rescued chimpanzees slowly build confidence and trust of other chimps who in turn become their long term allies. Integration is a long and continuous which is undertaken on schedule, by our keepers. We are happy to share this experience and take you on for one hour in a controlled environment.

Listen to the chimp caregiver talk about how they came to their history, how they came to the center, behavior and challenges. Be ready to be groomed by the infants and return a favor through carrying or grooming them.

Chimps enjoy rough trickles and can be rough. Your guide will  help interpret the different sounds, gestures and advise on how to behavior whilst with your cousins.

Imagine a chimp hold their cup of porridge, peeling a banana or asking for more food! Find out all these and much more through participating in this unique once in a life-time experience!

Reservation & Health: Prior reservation and health clearance is a MUST! Chimpanzees have regular health checks and update vaccinations. This is aimed at avoiding cross transmission of  diseases.

Lake Victoria – Leisure Cruises & Excursions

Sunset Cruises

With Lake Victoria is one of the largest lakes in the world; we offer from Entebbe late afternoon cruises by boat out towards the equator line or local islands to view the sun over the horizon.  Watch the fishermen cast their nets and enjoy the snacks and drinks provided on board.

Journey times for sunset cruises are approximately two hours in the late afternoon from around 5.00pm.

Cheese and Wine Cruise

The perfect end to a safari or trip to Uganda, a sunset cruise on the lake accompanied by cheese platter and your choice of wine.

Fishing Safaris – Lake Victoria

With Lake Victoria offering the opportunity for hooking one of the world’s largest fresh water fish the Nile Perch, anyone with with some free time and an interest can enjoy this day out.

All year round avoiding full moon and the April/May rainy season

Fish Caught / Methods

Nile Perch.  From approximately 8-80 kg in weight.  Trolling with lures is the main method of fishing used.

All equipment and lures for trolling for perch for up to 4 lines per boat are supplied, but anglers are free to bring their own.  Anything damaged or lost will need to be paid for before disembarkation.

Jinja Excursions

Jinja is the Adrenaline Capital of Uganda, most will book a day trip to Jinja but factoring in traffic jam from Kampala the journey could be tedious, thus we recommended an overnight stay in Jinja. This could be at the start of the safari as Jinja can easily be linked to Murchison Falls National Park, Kibale Forest National Park or even Lake Mburo National Park en-route to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

We have special arrangement with beautiful lodge in Jinja along the Nile, Haven’s Lodge; where clients can also choose Jinja for relaxation after their safari if they are not keen on any of the activities below;-

Jinja Activities

Kayak The Nile Learn to kayak on one of the world’s greatest rivers. Receive expert instruction from guides. Maximize your experience on the Nile, huge variety of rapids and sections for you to explore. Lunch and drinks provided on the river. All necessary safety and kayaking equipment.

Horse Riding Safaris beside the Nile: Explore the Nile River up close, see a traditional Ugandan village, and view the fantastic panorama from the hills overlooking the Nile River valley. For safety reasons there is a weight limit for clients of 90Kg.

Bungee Jump over the Nile:

With 3km upstream from Bujagali Falls, leap out over the Nile from a tower purpose-built for bungee jumping, constructed and operated to the highest New Zealand standards. The bar provides a great vantage point for spectators and source of calming fluids to help prepare for a jump.The minimum age is 13-years and minimum numbers apply.

Mountain Biking:

Explore the area on the east bank of Bujagali Falls on a 1½ – 2 hour guided bike ride. Cycle along tracks through villages and small farms and with views of the Nile along the way, Clients can continue to cycle up to a viewpoint giving a panoramic view of Jinja and Lake Victoria, cycling through villages, coffee, sugar and banana plantations give a taste of rural Uganda.

Boat Trips:

An African sunset over Bujagali Lake, with the smell of delicious food and cold drinks with soft music in the back ground.Boat Rides; On the River Nile from Bujagali Falls, near Jinja. 2 hour river tours between the Owens Falls Dam and the Bujagali Dam. Along the way you will see many local villagers living their normal lives, doing laundry, maybe even making charcoal and the different traditional fishing methods. This activity is done by the local community.

Kampala City Tours

Kampala City Tour On A Boda

Tour Kampala after breakfast where they will most certainly get to experience Kampala in the mornings. Kampala traffic Monday to Saturday crawls around the city before 10am. The performance of this day will be dictated by the eventual group size and inevitably the traffic. They will have opportunity to visit historical sites to include National Mosque, Bahai temple and the very colourful Nakesero market.

The City tour, will be done on a boda- motorcycle. The Boda boda is motorcycle taxi service that makes travels around Kampala traffic easy.  Experiencing Kampala city on back of boda boda is exceptional and uniquely Ugandan. You will start with visiting the Kabaka’s Palace and Parliament, The Kabaka`s Lake the largest manmade Lake in Africa made by Kabaka. Namirembe Cathedral this beautiful structure sited on a hill where you can oversee Kampala central offers a fascinating view for both local and foreign visitors, Rubaga Catholic Cathedral the oldest Catholic Cathedral in Uganda then proceed for to have local Ugandan Buffet for lunch. 

A traditional Uganda buffet lunch will be taken in the city as an introduction to local foodstuffs that would include the matooke banana, posho (maize meal), Irish potatoes and ground nut sauce. Such a meal is well presented.

After lunch explore down town Kampala markets, the old taxi park and thereafter return to your accommodation.

Traditional City Tour:

After a morning breakfast, enjoy the city tour. The tour shows you Kampala from all directions and angles. It covers all of Kampala’s original 7 hills  Namugongo Martry’s shrine, Bahai Temple, National Museum crafts Village, Cultural entertainment

Kampala City Tour with a visit to the Martyrs Shrines at Namugongo, a historical site where 22 Martyrs were set ablaze on the orders of a Buganda King for refusal to renounce Christianity. Proceed to the Bahai Temple in Uganda which is the only one of the kind in Africa to marvel at its beauty and cool ambience around it. We proceed to visit the Uganda National Museum to see the ethnological and natural-historical exhibitions that represent the country’s colorful past. The Kampala City Tour concludes with a visit to the Crafts village – an exhibition ground for all kinds of African crafts perfect for souvenirs. And if it’s a Friday, Saturday or Sunday you have the opportunity in the evening to experience a unique cultural entertainment of the main cultures of Uganda at the famous Ndere Cultural Centre on Wednesday and Friday at 1800hrs and on Sunday shows start at exactly 1900hrs.
